Silhouette Sheets and Iterative Designs - By Ahmed Bhutta

I created my silhouettes and then added a bit of lighting and shading to those that I wanted to pursue and develop further in order to choose the look of my character. I later decided that I would only develop silhouette 5 as I felt it best fitted my description in the character profile sheet. Below is my silhouette sheet.

I then went on to further develop silhouette 5 and try and turn him into a character I can progress with in an iterative sheet. This is shown below.

Above, I tried to experiment and progress with painting techniques and with attire. As Tim is an accountant I wanted to keep it stylish and smart but also bring his past Army experience with Moroccan culture into the design. Thats where the green and red comes in and the army style khaki trousers introduces his Army past. Tim is a confident person and I ave tried to show this in my design with the camel trench coat.

Above, for my the iteration, I took away from the character in order to simplify him. I took away the briefcase too that he would be carrying on his back. I would still like to do another iteration before I have a solid design for my final character.

Mood boards of Film, Painting Styles and Culture/Fashion - By Ahmed Bhutta

I researched some films with characters that had similar personality traits that I could look at for inspiration. As my character has a background of being from Morocco and England, I researched the Morrocan culture and their attire to see if perhaps I could include it in my character design. I also tried and tested different painting techniques with colours that I thought would best suit my character. I purposely included lots of reds, greens and browns to replicate the Morrocan culture.

I had a look at a few TV shows such and suits and Law and order. I found that in Suits, Harvey Spector possessed some traits of my described character and also the attire.

Below are my mood boards that I had created.

Observational drawings of anatomy & technology - By Ahmed Bhutta

After heading out and completing my character profile sheet, I decided to observe and conduct research relevant to what I wanted my character to perhaps look like. I began looking at amputated fingers as one of my characters hand has an index finger chopped off. Below are the sketches I had done on hand studies.

My character also has a steel hand where his membrane suit that allows him to breathe, is charged from. I decided to do a study of my own hand and develop from that to a study of what look like a steel or plated hand.

Before going on to do the drawing of the steel hand, I had looked at different kinds of ports and sockets in order to gain some understanding of the different types of charging ports and electrical systems. They are shown below.

I had also started looking at films that might inform the design of my character. I looked at Buffalo Soldiers 2001 and also looked at The matrix. I studied the character Morpheus and Neil as I felt my character has a personality trait of being a leader, and I feel Morpheus  and Neil also possess this trait. I did some studies on the port on Morpheus' head which allows him to enter the Matrix. I originally thought that the port I would want on my character's hand would be similar to that of Morpheus'. The studies are shown below.

Starting Off - By Ahmed Bhutta

Having a set theme for our game, we now needed to go on and create the characters that would perform in the game. I decided I was going to make the protagonist character.

Starting out, I travelled on the underground in order to see different behaviours of people and just to observe from life to gain inspiration. I found that people were dressed differently and different mannerisms on different tube lines which was interesting. Below are some observations from life that I had made with notes.

I had then decided to look online and find photos of tube travellers a few years ago. I managed to find authentic photos from the late 1980's/very early 1900's. I went on to observe them and sketch out ones which I found with the most character. They are shown below.
